For my printmaking project I made a piece with dandelions and dandelion fluff flying in the air. I chose to do this because I love dandelions, and I always make wishes by blowing on them when I find them. I chose to make the piece mostly coral, because it is one of my favorite color, and I a made the smaller flowers yellow because dandelions are little yellow flowers before they bloom all the way. I like the colors and theme of this piece, but I dislike that it is messy, and the colors got a little blended with each other. Overall I think the piece is a success because of the bright colors and fun designs.
3.Is copying always plagiarism or is there a gray area? Explain your thoughts.: I think that copying is not plagiarism. I think this because all art is inspired by something or someone, and that is the basis of art. It is wrong to take credit for someone's art, but to derive ideas from someone else's art is just part of the brainstorming process. I think drawing inspiration for your art from other art is like researching from various sources before writing a paper. It has been said by famous artists that "The bad artists imitate, the great artists steal'."An example of how I "stole" is when I drew Tom & Jerry with the background as the starry night. I stole the animators' work from the show, and I stole Van Gogh's work. Although it is heavily based off these pieces, I am the one who created a new piece, combining my ideas with their's, so I do not consider it plagiarism. 8.What was the warm up or sketchbook assignment that you learned the most from?: I learned the most from the warmups in which we practiced drawing balls with oil pastels, chalk pastels, and colored pencils. I learned how to use these mediums, how to blend them, and what kind of a look they had. I also learned how to draw items that are three dimensional, and how to show reflections and shadows. It made drawing realistic looking art way easier, and less intimidating. It was also interesting to learn how there is so much technique behind drawing such a simple object. I think it was very fun, and these warm ups really helped me later on. 9.Illustration Fridays have been completed almost every week this semester, do you feel this assignment helped you brainstorm for main project or helped you skill levels in any way? Why, or why not?: I think these assignments helped me a lot. In my art, I usually stick to the same style/theme of art, but since there was a new theme every week, it really made me broaden my horizon. I was able to use a different medium every week, learn new techniques, and just practice my art skills. I think it really made me more creative, helped me think outside the box, learn to work with a deadline, and improved my art skills overall. It was also less stressful than some other assignments, and I had a lot of fun trying something new every week. I also based some of my projects off of the Illustration Friday pieces I liked, and they helped me practice using a certain technique or medium before starting the actual project. One of my favorite Illustration Friday pieces was for the theme "People" and I drew three dancers, because I love dancing. 1. When you are critiquing a piece of art, the first thing to do is describe everything you observe about the piece. You should also identify the genre, and the materials and techniques used. After that, you analyze what the focal point is, how repetition of used, and what elements are used in the piece. The next step is to interpret what is happening in the piece, what the artist is saying, and why the artist made the piece. Finally, you decide what your opinion on the piece is. You state what you like and dislike about the piece, then evaluate whether or not the artist is successful, and explain your opinions. 2. Here is a critique I did on an older piece a couple of months ago. 3. Critique of my artwork: Before beginning this piece, I drew out a rough sketch on a piece of paper the same size as my tiles. On this piece of paper I figured out what designs I would use and practiced drawing them. I also wrote out what colors I would use, measurements and planned the layout of the piece . After this I sanded the tiles a primed them so the paint would stick. After that I painted in my background, sketched the main shapes with pencil, and then painted in the colors. The main colors in my piece are black, green, orange, blue, red, and white. Then, I went back with a paint pen and added in the designs. The texture of the piece was very smooth, but I embellished this piece with gems and beads to add some dimension. There are a lot of circles, geometric print, free hand patterns, and symmetry in mu piece. It is made up of vibrant colors in light, medium, and dark values that stand out, but still work well together. The focal point of my piece is the center, and the rest of the piece revolves around it, which is appealing to the eye. The repetition and symmetry creates a sense of unity. There are a lot of designs to look at, but I think there is enough negative space to compliment the patterns. I would classify the genre of this piece as cultural art. This piece is a rangoli, a design made with colored rice flour in India outside of homes and temples to welcome in visitors. The bright colors and intricate patterns that stand out make me feel happy and excited, because rangolis are often made for celebrations. I also have a lot of good memories making them with my mom and grandmother when I was younger, and looking at the rangolis when I visit India. I think the most important part of the piece is that it is just so bright, vibrant colors that capture the eye. I created this piece to share my culture, and also because I always enjoyed making them so much. I like the captivating colors and intricate designs in the piece, but I dislike that the patterns are not as perfectly spaced out as I thought they would be. If I were to do the project again, I would plan it out more beforehand, and measure everything before painting. Overall I like my piece because it shows my culture, it has elaborate designs, eye catching embellishments, vivid colors, and I associate it with good memories.
I thought it was a lot of fun to make this project, but it was messy, and I don't think I would have the patience to do it again. I enjoyed working with my partner because we both had different ideas but we were able to combine them into one piece. She also helped me with the placement and composition. It was interesting to do because I usually do my art in a more orderly way, and this was more abstract. We didn't really have a theme, but we did try to tie the piece together with tissue paper and the sparkly ribbon. This is one of my favorite pieces from the art show because I love how there is focus one just a few objects, but there are so many details hidden in the background, that still look so realistic. I love that you can see the stitching and texture in the chairs, and the texture of the bricks. You can also tell that there is a glass wall instead of it looking like a hole in the wall. I drew a portrait of my four year old cousin because I see her a lot so we are very close, and because she's cute. I chose oil pastel because I haven't used it a lot before and I wanted to try it out. I think the art criticism process is figuring out what needs improvement, how to improve it, and finally improving it. For this assignment I made a rangoli. A rangoli is an Indian design made on the ground outside of homes using vibrantly colored rice flour, to welcome in visitors. I made a rangoli because it is a part of my Indian culture and is something that my grandma and mom taught me to do when I was younger. I used acrylic paint on tiles, because tiles are similar to the ground. The part i found most difficult was making everything even and symmetrical. If I were to do this again, i would have planned it out a little more before painting. The skin warmup was the most helpful because even though I didn't paint a person, it taught me how to mix colors well. For this project, I made two lockers with my group members. We made them so one was the "Before" locker and the other one was the "After" locker. One contains a sparkly unicorn, green grass, a rainbow, and a dark hand claiming the unicorn to death. The other locker contains a decapitated unicorn head and horn, unicorn guts splattered on the walls, and intestines and other organs hanging in the locker.
My mentor is Allison. We talked about our favorite mediums and projects. Her blog link is allison-apex-2016.weebly.com. What I found most interesting about our discussion was her multimedia butt project.
For this project, I made a series of bowls. I chose to do this because I haven't worked with clay very much, and I thought it would be interesting to work with a new medium. I chose to use navy blue, coral, and white because those are the colors in my room. I like the colors, shapes, and patterns in my pieces. However, if I were to do it again, I would try to make the clay less lumpy, and more even.
