For my oil painting practice, I did two paintings of a bell pepper, one with a brush and one with a palette knife. I haven't worked much with oils in the past, so it was helpful to figure out how to blend colors and develop value and texture. One thing I liked was how I was able to blend the colors directly on the painting, especially on the first one, which led to a smooth finish. I'm used to being able to paint over things in layers in acrylic, so it was a little strange to not be able to do that, but I liked that the longer drying time let me go back and add things. On the second one, I had more trouble blending the colors. Since my paint was on the canvas so thick, it was hard to blend, and the colors were either too stark or too muddy. However, I still like the range of values I used and the contrast of it. Another problem I had with the palette knife one was with getting clean edges, and mine are a little choppy. I think in the future if I were to use both a palette knife and a brush I would be able to have texture but with a cleaner finish. I did think it was fun to use the palette knife to smear on the paint though, and I liked how much more interesting it was to look at.
