For this project, my top choices were a landscape of a mountain, a pathway with trees on the side, and a stream. I chose to do the landscape of a mountain from Washington. I really liked this picture because of the bright sky that contrasted with the rest of the colors. I also liked the soft texture of the clouds in the background and the big trees in the foreground. I chose to do acrylic, because I thought it would help me paint all the layers of the piece, and I feel that I have more control with acrylic than oil paint.
To begin my piece, I painted my canvas sky blue. I then went back and added the big white clouds with a fluffy brush using shades of white, blue, and gray. After that dried, I painted the main colors of the mountains and ground, and then went back to add more value and texture to them. I spent a lot of time developing the mountains' texture, and after that I went back to make them look misty like they were partially behind the clouds. This was a little difficult to do for me, but I was able to use the same colors as the clouds and just thin down my paint with some water and lightly dab on top of the mountains I had painted. After that, I painted the trees in the foreground and the little houses.
I really like the way the big clouds on the left turned out, and how it overlaps the mountains. However, I wish that the other clouds looked more wispy and not so defined. I also think that when I began painting, I didn't proportion it correctly which left too much green space in the bottom, and I wasn't sure what to do with it, because I felt like you wouldn't be able to see its texture from a distance. However, I think the mountain and trees take most of the focus so it looks fine. I also had a difficult time figuring out how to do the trees in the foreground because I didn't want the green to blend with the mountains, and it was also difficult to develop the texture. My favorite part of the piece aside from the overlapping the clouds was the little houses in the front. I think they really tie the piece together and make it more interesting than an ordinary green mountain. Overall, I'm very happy with this piece, and its been a long time since I've done a landscape so it was very satisfying to paint this.
