I think that over the course of this semester I have gotten much more organized when it comes to planning each project. Although I have always found pictures and sketched out ideas beforehand, this year by making lists of ideas, gathering reference pictures, and doing composition sketches and full size sketches, by the time I got to actually doing my piece, it was much more efficient with a better result. This was very helpful for me because I always tend to get ahead of myself and then not know what to do half way through the piece, and especially working on a tight schedule, planning out pieces in this way is an important time management skill.
In this class I had a chance to develop my skills in different mediums, and paint/draw subject matter that I generally don't. Before this class I hadn't done much oil paint, but over the course of this semester I have learned how to mix colors, how to layer paint, and how to blend well. Even though it still isn't my favorite medium, I feel a lot more comfortable using it now than I did at the beginning of the class. I've always liked Prismas, but this year I got a lot better at using them and blending with them. In this class I also did self and animal portraits, which I haven't done much before. I learned a lot about proportioning portraits and how to sketch different body parts/fur/hair, etc..
Throughout this semester I also learned to be more creative and not just copy pictures exactly. I learned to exaggerate values to create more contrast, change the composition to bring more interest to the piece, and alter pictures by using warm/cold colors. I've also had to compile multiple reference pictures to create my own unique piece, which was kind of new for me because I usually just like to take my own picture and then draw it exactly. For example, in my nature turns mechanical, I had to have pictures of giraffes, anatomy diagrams, and gears in order to create my piece.
Throughout the course of this semester, I have gotten better at planning out and executing creative projects with various mediums and subject matter. My art has drastically improved during this class, and I have also gotten much more disciplined when it comes to putting in the time for each piece and working on a strict schedule. I have also learned a lot about what I like to do and what I am good at. I have had a chance to improve the skills I already had and learn new art skills.
