Michael Kagan is a New York based artist, who paints large scale, iconic images. Kagan paints Space-based paintings, mostly machinery and space equipment, such as rockets, space stations, and astronaut suits. He was recently commissioned by the Smithsonian, and found inspiration from their air and space archives to create three large pieces. Kagan uses an impasto technique, using thick strokes of oil paint on linen. He paints both abstract and representational styles.
Kagan's pieces contain vibrant colors, usually including various shades of blue that draw you in. His intricate brush strokes create an abstract, yet realistic painting. All of his paintings share a similar element but are very diverse from each other, as well as other paintings I have seen. Kagan pays extra attention to detail and each piece has so much to look at. I find Kagan very inspiring because his pieces are vibrant and interesting. I feel like you could look at one of his pieces for hours on end and still have more to look at. All of his pieces have a unique style that draws attention to them, and contain iconic images.
