- Describe how you arranged your composition. Discuss your use of the elements and principles. Is it a successful composition?
I focused on the bottles in the center of the table. I included the CD case, and the vase and wine bottle on the pedestal too. I did my best to have more used space than white space to have a good composition. I also tried to find objects that had a wide range of color to have good contrast in my drawing. I also tried to include a variety of shapes in my drawing. - Did you use a wide range of values? (A range from white to black with at least 9 values). Explain how is this evident?
I did use a wide range of values in my drawing. For example, the Sterling Wine bottle on the right and a few labels are black. However the mason jar and vase are a much lighter color because they are meant to be transparent. I also made the highlights on the bottles white, and added black shadows to show depth. - Explain how your knowledge and creating practice studies with value contributed to your piece.
I used the nine values of shading we learned in Art 1 and reviewed this year to add dimension to my piece. I also tried to use what I had learned about composition to chose a good setup with the right amount of whitespace. - Describe the blending and transitions in your objects (discuss your use of pressure with pencil and other techniques to achieve this).
When I shaded in the shadows for each bottle, I made the outline very dark, and decreased pressure gradually to lighten up and fade into the background. I did the same thing when I shaded the "peaks and valleys" of the fabric, to have a smooth transition, so it wouldn't look cartoony. - Explain how your interpretation of texture is essential in capturing the look of the object.
I know the bottles on the table are smooth and reflective, so I showed that in my piece by having clean, straight edges and highlights that accented the shape and texture of the bottles. For the fabric, I tried to include "peaks and valleys" to show the flowing texture. I wanted the ribbon on the vase to look satiny, so I tried to add highlights and shading to show the shine of the fabric. - If you could recreate your pieces what would you do differently to enhance the final outcome?
If I could recreate my piece I would try to add even more contrast with darker darks and lighter lights. I would also change my composition a little so it would focus more on the bottles at the bottom, and less on the vase and bottle at the top. That was my initial composition, but I didn't draw my bottles to the right scale, so I had to add more bottles so I wouldn't have too much white space. I would also try to include more light values in the fabric, because it is supposed to be white, and make it look a little smoother.
