For this concentration piece I chose to draw three Indian oil lamps sitting on a reflective table. These lamps have traditional Indian colors and patterns, and lighting lamps are an important part of our culture (kind of how like people light menorahs). Lamps like these are always lit for important holidays and important events. Back in the day oil lamps were used because electricity didn't exists, and now they are an important part of our culture.
I started this piece by sketching out the three lamps. It was a little difficult for me because I had to make it symmetrical and the perspective was difficult because its at a diagonal. After I sketched them, I colored the lamps and the flames. I used white gel pen to go back and add some detailing to the painted part of the lamps. Then I went back and add the reflections on the surface under the lamps. I had a hard time figuring out what to do with the background because I felt like it was too boring to have the whole background one color. However I didn't want to do a bright color because the lamps already have so many different colors and I didn't want them to blend in with the background.
I really like the way the piece came out overall. I especially like the contrast of colors in the lamps and the way it stands out from the background. I also like the way that the light coming off of the fire looks. However, I feel like the black paper wasn't very good quality so the colors didn't go on like I wanted them to and it was difficult to develop the color and texture without it being grainy and waxy so if I were to do it again I would choose a different paper. I would have also done the reflections differently because I don't their color. However, I still think the piece is a good reflection of Indian culture and I like the way it turned out.
