For my 7th concentration piece, I chose to do a painting of an auto, which is like an informal taxi in India. Autos are something that you see on every street in India, they are very commonly used, and are very easily identified due to their distinctive shape and bright yellow color. Although I have ridden in them very much, I see dozens of them every time I visit India, and it something unique to India's cities and not something you find in other countries. I thought a painting would be best to show its bright color, and I also wanted it to be large and eye catching. I decided to do a blurred/streaky background as though the auto is moving to add some interest to the piece, and I thought that would like nice in acrylic paint.
I began by sketching, and then did my first layer of yellow on the auto, since it is a translucent color, so that I could later go back and add more value and layers. I then did the black roof of the car. The background was really difficult to do because I wanted it to look like it was moving but still needed the perspective to be right.
I then had to go back and add details to the auto like its plate number, and this took me a while because its hard for me to do small details in paint.
Overall, I'm pleased with the way the piece came out and I think it looks like a real auto and is a good representation of the busy city life there. If I were to do it again, I would have tried to make the yellow more opaque and added better shadows. However, I really like the shade of yellow I used and I like the way it pops off the page. I'm also pretty satisfied with the background because to me it does look its moving. There are a few details that aren't as neat as I'd like them, but this canvas size is also larger than I'm used to, so overall I'm pretty happy with my work.
