For this concentration piece, I chose to draw mangos. Mangos are a fruit native to India, and it something I enjoy everytime I go to visit. It's always something my family and I look forward to, because Indian mangoes are always sweeter than the ones here. However, even when we are here, my mom always buys mangoes for us in the summer and always finds the perfect one. I chose to do prismacolor again because I wanted that smooth texture and wanted to be able to develop the color and values in layers. I chose to combine a few different pictures and did two whole mangos, but also added a cut open one because I wanted something different in the picture as well.
I started by sketching my mangoes. After that I went back and added values to them. I had to layer the colors a lot in order to develop the texture the way I wanted to. After that, I went back and added little dots to them since fruits kinda have pores and little bruises on them. I chose to do a light gray background because I wanted something neutral so it wouldn't take away from the mangoes, and I chose a bluish gray because I thought it would contrast the orange in the fruit well. I chose a wood table to put it on because I thought that the piece could use some darkness and a different texture.
Overall I'm very happy with the way that the piece came out. I love the different vibrant colors and the way that the highlights and shadows look. It took me a really long time to layer the colors for the mango, but in the end I think it was worth it. I also had a difficult time with the tabletop because I wanted to layer all those colors, but the paper kept showing through. I think in the end it looks ok, but it's not as smooth of a finish as I wanted. I would also like to go back and add some more shadows where the mangos overlap and in between the cuts of the mangoes.
