For my fourth concentration piece I chose to draw lotuses because they are the national flower and a popular symbol of India. I chose to do one flower and one flower bud because I thought it would be a more interesting composition, and I also chose very vibrant and contrasting colors because I really wanted a bright piece that showed the beauty of India's nature. I chose to do Prisma Color because I thought it would give me good control over where I put different colors and also allow me to have the texture I wanted while still being able to blend.
I started by sketching out my two flowers. After that I went back with white and red to create the shape and color of the flower petals. Initially I wasn't sure what kind of background I was going to have but then I thought that green would contrast nicely with the pink in the flowers so I chose to surround them with lily pads. After that, I though the piece could use some darker values since the rest was light and vibrant, so I chose to do a dark blue background as the water.
Overall, I was really pleased with the way that this piece turned out. I love how the different colors go together. I also like the shadows in the flowers themself. However, if I were to do it again I would change the texture of the water. The water isn't very even throughout the piece which I don't like. I also wish that I had found a way to add some lighter colors to the water, but when I tried to do that it looked really unnatural and out of place. I would also like to go back and improve some of the details on the lily pads. Overall I think this piece is a good representation of India and it's beauty, and I'm happy with the way it looks.
