For this piece, I chose to do a drawing of a clock. This clock was bought by my great great grandfather in 1899, and has hung in our family home since then. It still works perfectly and has been in use for about 120 years. My other pieces represent India as a whole, but this piece really shows my family history in India and this clock is something I see every time I go to India, and also represents the home that my family built that is still standing after about 130 years. This clock is something very important to me and my whole family. I chose to do prismacolor because I wanted to capture all the fine details, and get the antiquey and rich finish on the clock.
I began this piece by sketching out the clock. After that I decided to do the cast shadow and the background first, because often times I get lazy to do it if I wait till the end. It then went back and started shading the wood and putting in the base values. After that I started drawing the circles and numbers in the actual face of the clock. It was very difficult to get all the little details and the proportions right since I kind of free handed it. Then I went back and burnished the wood part and added different colors like pink and blue for the shadows and highlights because I thought it would make it look less 2 dimensional. I then went back and finished the dial. This was really hard because of the tiny numbering and lettering since I had to color between them and also write so neatly.
Overall, I'm really pleased with the way this turned out. I think it really does look like the clock and it makes me really happy to see something so important. I wish that the background looked a little neater, but its a little streaky and waxy since the color isn't very pigmented. However, I love the color of the clock and I think the numbers came out really neatly.
