For my ninth concentration piece, I chose to do a painting of a temple in my dad's hometown. It is a very ancient and deeply rooted in India's history, and is a place that my dad has visited often throughout his life, and somewhere I visit everytime I go to India. I have always loved this place's architecture, especially since it was first built in 6th century AD, and has been an important, central part of the city ever since.
I chose to paint this because I really enjoyed painting my last piece, and thought that paint would allow me to layer the colors the way I wanted them. I began by painting the sky and the square in front of the temple after my wash. After that, I went back and added the base values of the temple itself. I then went back and added colors to it, because the actual temple is covered with colorful sculptures, but I didn't want to show all those details, but wanted to capture its essence. This was the hardest part because I wanted value in the stone, but still needed it to be colorful and bright. I then added the red and white striped wall that most temples have around them, which was also difficult because I had to paint uniform stripes. I then went back and added trees behind the walls.
Overall I'm happy with the way the piece came out, because it's identifiable as the actual place, but there are some details that I still don't like. I wish the stripes were more uniform, and I feel like the foreground is a little too boring. I'm also not completely happy with the value in the piece and the spread of the trees. However, for me painting was really difficult because I didn't have as much control as I do with colored pencil, so I'm still pleased with what I was able to do. I'm still not done and need to go back and finish it.
